Continuing Educational Opportunities

The South Texas Chapter Associated General Contractors focuses a great deal of its energy in developing the quality of our local workforce.

There are many career choices that extend beyond the trades. With a good trades background and the desire to move up the opportunities are unlimited.

The AGC offers training programs to allow employees of local contractors to move up the career ladder. Courses offered have been Blue Print reading 1 & 2, Construction Estimating, all the Microsoft Office Products Software, Construction Math in English and Spanish, Safety in all Trades and Supervisory Training. These are just a few of the courses that have been offered. If you are interested in another course, let us know!

Our courses are industry and membership driven. When a member asks for the opportunity to pursue a particular field of training we seek input from our entire membership to insure we can offer the course at the most affordable rate. The more students in a class the less we will have to charge an individual. This has resulted in our being able to train a large number of students for a very reasonable fee and recruit highly qualified instructors.

Apprenticeship Training

The South Texas Chapter Associated General Contractors sponsors a Department of Labor certified apprenticeship program.

MASONRY is a 3-year program requiring 144 hours of classroom instruction and 2,000 hours of On the Job Training each year. The Department of Labor requires that apprentices must be employed in the skill they are being trained in during their apprenticeship. Should a student enter the program with previous experience it is possible to receive advance placement credit through testing/skill demonstration at the time of their initial application. Participants will work side-by-side journeymen masons learning the skills of the trade while they work. Students will be exposed to all tools, materials and techniques applicable to their trade. They will receive incremental wage increases commensurate with the level of training they have completed. Upon completion of the program they be receiving full journeyman’s compensation. The Department of Labor will provide them a certificate of completion to document their accomplishment. This training is recognized nationwide and is highly valuable when applying for future employment.

Eligibility is determined without discrimination because of sex, race, color, creed, religion or national origin.
